«When we developed the idea for this work the city of The Hague had been a
huge building site for many years. Whole neighbourhoods were newly built.
It triggered our fantasy imagining the architects creating the structure
in which generations would live their lives. Walking down a street
seems like a choice one can make but suddenly we got painfully aware of
the fact that someone had decided to put a road just there for us to walk
on.
William Living is our idea about an architect taking his visions and ideas
just one step further than expected.
The anthill in the video is an almost divine building. Made by insects who
do not have brains. The utopian visions of the architect stay utopian, visualized
in the head of the spectator.
What is real is the anthill. The end of the film can be seen as a moment
in which William Living is forced to snap out of his visions, and is unable
to accept their confrontation with reality.» (Pia Wergus and Arjen de Leeuw).
